Northeast Regional Cancer Institute Cancer Survivors Park
The Cancer Survivors Park, at McDade Park in Scranton was created to provide a physical location at which to display the artwork of individuals who participated in the Survivor’s Tiles Art Therapy Project. Under the Tile initiative, survivors were/are encouraged to express their cancer experience by painting (6” x 6”) ceramic tiles. These tiles were then incorporated into an open air “cathedral” of towers at McDade Park. From its creation, Survivors Park has served as monument to the strength and optimism of Cancer Survivors – drawing visitors year round, who have drawn strength from their personal connection to specific tiles and/or the totality of art represented at the site.
Survivors Park was originally designed to serve as a tangible tribute to all who have been affected by cancer. Cancer Survivors Park has brought together survivors, family members, caregivers and friends to both express their experiences by creating a tile, and to create a unique venue that allows for reflection on their cancer experience in the peace and tranquility of the McDade Park setting.
However time, and more specifically northeastern Pennsylvania winters have a taken a toll on the Park. The original tiles have experienced substantial damage from water and frost, to the point that a major restoration of the site is needed.
